Steel tubes (OCTG) and line pipe
The opening is already the rule verif Resolución 1/2023 de Comercio and Tenaris's quasi-monopoly has broken in pipeline pipe thesis: Welspun won the pipe for the San Matías gas pipeline and the Government publicly backed the import despite the antidumping threat prob press. You do not get in here by manufacturing high-end seamless tube —a prohibitive capital barrier— but with the service on imported tube in the basin: threading, inspection, traceability and a tube yard that delivers when the well asks for it thesis.

What the market is made of
The bulk of this market is well tube that comes out of a single plant, and that part is not contestable with reasonable capital. The other — pipeline pipe — is tendered and decided on price, and an importer has already got in.
Seamless well tube is made in the country by a single manufacturer. Competing with it takes a steel mill: the barrier is capital, not technical know-how. thesis
Large-project pipeline pipe — which is tendered, and has already been awarded abroad — plus the service on imported tube: threading, inspection, traceability and storage in the basin. estim
Little fixed capital and a lot of working capital: what you put in is not a plant, it is the money that finances the tube while it travels, plus the crew that receives it in the basin. thesis
Why we do not put a number on it The three ways in - importing the pipe, threading and inspecting in the basin, and the tube yard - have no published size and are not derived from the calculation: the market is measured by tonne of tube delivered to the well or to the trench, not by what the service around it invoices. Estimating it would require the price of threading and inspection per tonne, which is not published.
Who really pays?
The obvious name is not always the client. The tube is owner-procured: it is bought by the project owner, not the contractor who installs it.
Tenaris sells through its Rig Direct service: it takes charge of the «mill-to-well» chain and the client pays for the tubes it uses.
VMOS S.A.: a national maker supplies the pipes for the final section of the oil pipeline, made in Argentina. Southern Energy (SESA) signed on 23-Dec-2025 with a foreign maker the contract for the 36-inch pipes of the San Matías gas pipeline prob.
The joint venture of two EPC contractors built the VMOS oil pipeline for VMOS S.A. and finished the works in August 2026 prob; the joint venture of two other contractors won the civil works of the San Matías gas pipeline, for some USD 530 M.
Which projects move this demand

These are leading signals: they move before tube demand does, not after.
The import opening is already the rule in force verif Resolución 1/2023 de Comercio. Techint's antidumping threat against Welspun was not formalized: by late January 2026 the complaint had not been filed —the company said it was preparing the technical documentation— and the Government's rejection was public and political, with no administrative act prob press.

With idle capacity it can match price and push out the importer. thesis

Be the local channel for imported pipe: buy it abroad, finance it, clear it through customs and stand behind it. Welspun already proved the Argentine buyer accepts it thesis.
Threading, non-destructive testing (NDT) and traceability in the basin, on imported tube that arrives without a connection.
A tube yard with on-demand storage, so the pipe reaches the well when it is needed and not before.
When you get paid, and what blocks it
already in
split
Historic quasi-monopoly in seamless tube thesis. Its antidumping threat against Welspun was never formalized: by late January 2026 the complaint had not been filed, and the Government said publicly it would not pay more for the pipe prob.
Won the tender for the pipe of the San Matías gas pipeline, which carries Vaca Muerta gas to the Río Negro coast for LNG export; Tenaris had bid about 40% higher prob. The Government said publicly it would not pay more for the pipe, despite Techint's antidumping threat: it is the first break in the monopoly in pipeline pipe thesis.
The jobs it createsEmployment in tube threading/inspection/logistics in the basin; lowers the cost of pipelines (the Welspun crack) and enables more projects. Flip side: the import strains Campana's steelmaking employment. thesis
calculate it
The number is our own estimate. The calculation, step by step, is below.
The full calculation, step by step
Concentration VERY HIGH (Tenaris quasi-monopoly in seamless tube) thesis. It is eroding in welded pipe for large projects (Welspun), and the Government publicly backed the import in the face of the antidumping threat, which by late January 2026 had not been formally filed prob press: the protectionist barrier came down.
The rule that moves it
The federal opening agenda reinforces this niche.

opening and deregulation + better export netbackWhere the number comes from
~USD 513M/year (the OCTG leg)
See the calculation, the variables and how it was validated
The OCTG leg (well tube) does not come from a source: it is built up from the well, with three variables that can each be checked on their own.
The line pipe leg (~USD 325 M) is not a formula: it is project contracts — VMOS oil pipeline pipe ~USD 350 M unconf + Welspun pipe for the San Matías gas pipeline, USD 203 M prob press. It is a per-project market (lumpy): it drops sharply when the mega-pipeline wave ends — peak 2025-2027, not a recurring base. Without simultaneous mega-pipelines, the recurring market is the OCTG leg alone: ~USD 450-600 M/year around the formula's ~513 M (450-500 wells and steel prices moving between USD 1,600-2,000/t).
The number rests on a few variables. The formula shows how it moves when each one changes; and each variable carries its freshness seal — how often it is worth revisiting. estim
The figure is built from the well, and that is where the adjustment that weighs most lies: the steel per well is about 600 tonnes, not the 850 often quoted, and the physical calculation bounds it. The project-pipe leg rests on contracts reported by the press —Welspun's, USD 203 M—; the amount for the VMOS oil pipeline pipe is not published in the notes we opened. ⚠️ The data point that defines the thesis —that the antidumping threat was never formalized— comes from the press chronology and not from an administrative act, so it is stamped as probable. And the price per tonne remains the estimated component.
